Why Athletes Should Have a Daily Hydration Routine

Athletes spend hours improving their strength, speed, endurance, and technique. But one of the simplest parts of performance can easily be overlooked: hydration.

Hydration shouldn’t begin five minutes before practice or only after a tough workout. A consistent hydration routine throughout the day helps athletes arrive at training prepared to perform.

Hydration Supports Performance

Water plays an important role in many of the body’s normal functions, including temperature regulation, circulation, and muscle function.

Exercise increases fluid loss, especially through sweat. Hot temperatures, humidity, workout intensity, clothing, and individual sweat rates can all affect how much fluid an athlete loses.

When fluid losses become significant, athletic performance can suffer. That is why athletes should think about hydration as part of their overall preparation—not simply as a response to thirst.

Start Before the Workout

A good hydration routine starts well before training.

Instead of trying to drink a large amount of water immediately before exercise, athletes can focus on drinking fluids consistently throughout the day. Keeping a water bottle nearby at school, work, practice, or while traveling can make hydration easier to maintain.

Starting a workout adequately hydrated puts the athlete in a better position to manage the additional fluid lost during exercise.

Hydrate During Activity

Long or intense training sessions can result in substantial sweat loss. Athletes should have regular opportunities to drink fluids during practices, workouts, games, and competitions.

Individual needs vary. Athletes who sweat heavily or exercise for extended periods may also need to consider electrolyte replacement, particularly sodium.

Don’t Forget Recovery

The workout may be over, but hydration isn’t.

Replacing fluids after exercise is an important part of recovery. Pair post-workout hydration with a balanced meal or snack containing appropriate carbohydrates, protein, and electrolytes based on the demands of the activity.

Where Does Alkaline Water Fit?

Alkaline water can be incorporated into an athlete’s daily hydration routine just like other drinking water. Some athletes may prefer its taste, which can make consistently drinking water more enjoyable.

However, alkaline water should not be viewed as a substitute for good nutrition, appropriate electrolyte replacement, quality sleep, or proper training.

Consistency Wins

Great performances are often built on small habits repeated every day. Hydration is one of them.

Don’t wait until game time to think about water. Hydrate before. Hydrate during. Rehydrate after.

Your preparation starts long before the whistle blows.
